Literary Translation (Les Miserables)

LES MISERABLES

1.) Where is the setting of the novel?

  • The setting of the novel Les Miserables is in Paris, France.

2.) What are the details of the play that would show the concepts of the literary translation?

  • The details of the play that show the concepts of the literary translation are the songs/lyrics, the action done on how they portray the characters background, the language used and the flow of the story.

3.) Can you list the most important characters in the play? Explain why you choose the characters.

  • Jean Valjean, even though he is an ex-convict he prove himself that he can change. He has redemptive power of compassion and love.
  • Fantine, she is a poor, working-class girl with no education, her character is a mother figure because all she did is for the sake of her child Cosette.
  • Eponine, she fell in love with the man who love another woman, but despite that she even help him to find his loved one and die in the arms of the man he loved and didn't had the bad feeling about him because she herself know what really the truth.

4.) After reading the summary from sparksnote.com compare and contrast the two different version.

  • The novel from the sparksnote is also one of the literary translation because the main ideas or thought is in the story, the concepts and the characters. And in the musical play it is very interesting because you can enjoy the story by the lyrics and you can feel the characters. Both the summary and the musical play are the same because main concepts of the authors are there.

5.) What can you say about the music play? What particular details from the play can you relate to literary translation ?

  •  The musical play is very intense, you can really feel and understand the story. The action done by the characters are portrayed well, and you feel the excitement and joy while watching and listen the musical play  The musical play is a form of theatrical performance that combins acting while singing, so i can relate it to ht literary translation.

6.) Can you list the parts that got your attention as a viewer.

  • While watching the musical play I feel the excitement in every scene, but one thing that caught my attentions is when Eponine have a feeling for Marius and he didn't even know but despite of that she still help Marius track where Cosette is, the girl he loves. And in the end she die in the arms of the man that she loved.

7.) What ideas from the play that justify the greatness of the novel.

  • The ideas of the play that justify the greatness of the novel is the injustice of the law, and the increasing  of the poverty. The rebellion of the student because of the injustice law of the government. And the most important thing is the changes of the character from bad to good like Jean Valjean, who change because of the bishop who perished him despite all the sin that he had.

8.) What concepts from literary translation would you use to create a different musical adaptation of the novel?

  • The novel Les Miserables has so many adaptation, and one of that is musical play. The concepts that I would use to create a different musical adaptation of the novel is the redemptive power of compassion and love.

MY REFLECTION

The Boy Who Cried Books

Did your ever feel being alone, not having someone to support you?. Did you ever think on doing something to work out your problems?. Did you ever experience to sell something in the street to support yourself?.

After I watched the documentary "The Boy Who Cried Books" I learned so many things. Justin De Castro the boy in the story, 19 year old had experience selling books in the street to survive in life and to sustain his studies to become a lawyer. He believes that books are the most precious thing in the world.

I felt how determined he is despite all the thing that happened to him he didn't stop doing something that will make him stand on his own feet by the help of all the people he encountered. His not even ashamed to revealed that he has a bipolar disorder. Justin De Castro neatly stacks up his book on the brick sidewalk and in the middle of piles of books stand a chalkboard on which he writes note on his thoughts for the day.

I think expressing ones thought makes other people understand you. Being who you are is the best way to feel lightened from all the problem. It is very inspirational that what his doing is for him to be successful and give knowledge by sharing various thing based on his experienced.

"If there is something that anyone can have in excess, it's learning." - Justin shared

I think this line tells about how reading books is very important, there are so many benefits that we can get just by reading books, it can be for pleasure or by enhancing our knowledge. We can travel around the just by having a book, its very interesting that we can also meet new people knowing that you have the same interest and start a good conversations. Its a good thing that we have book because it can be our companion whenever we want to be alone and have a piece of mind.

"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. and the only way to do great work is to love what you you. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking, don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it." -- Steve Jobs
